Checkerboard

Checkerboard

Several different types of checkerboards are used in different variants of the game of checkers. The usual checkerboard is the one used in so-called "pool checkers," also called "Spanish pool checkers," which consists of an 8×8 board, making its dimensions identical to those of the chessboard. Commercial checkerboards generally have black and red squares (left figure above), with the board being oriented so that each player has a black square in the left corner. In tournament play, the colors of the checkerboard squares usually consist of olive green and buff, where "buff" is a color variously defined as a moderate orange yellow or a light to moderate yellow (right figure). The colors of the squares are, however, referred to as "black" and "red."
